Anti-aging treatments come in many forms, from fillers that plump up the skin to quick facials that refresh your complexion. One of the most fascinating technologies, however, is microneedling.
Microneedling treatments renew the skin by creating microscopic injuries with microneedles that penetrate the skin at precise depths. They induce a healing cascade that gives collagen and elastin production a corrective boost, visibly reducing nearly all issues related to skin texture and aging.
There are plenty of microneedling devices on the market, but in this post, we’ll compare two major ones offered at SEV: SkinPen vs Morpheus8.
How Does Morpheus8 Differ From SkinPen?
Morpheus8 is an advanced microneedling treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy. As the microneedles sink into the skin, they emit fractionated radiofrequency that heats deeper levels of the skin without disturbing the top layers which tightens the skin and can also lead to fat coagulation.
By comparison, SkinPen is a more traditional microneedling treatment, without additional stimulating energy. Its maximum depth of penetration is lower than Morpheus8, so it effectively targets the skin but not the underlying layers. It’s ideal for addressing issues that impact the higher layers of the skin, like scarring, fine lines, and discoloration.
At SEV, both SkinPen and Morpheus8 can be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to boost results. PRP is rich in growth factors for improved skin rejuvenation, helping with scarring, fine lines, and other skin concerns.
SkinPen vs RF Microneedling – Key Factors Compared
When comparing SkinPen vs RF microneedling like Morpheus8, these are the most important factors to consider.
Intensity
Morpheus8 has adjustable microneedles that penetrate more deeply than SkinPen. It also has the added stimulating effect of radiofrequency, which is delivered to the deepest layers that are being treated.
It’s highly customizable, though, so your provider can reduce the intensity level and depth when treating delicate areas such as around the eyes.
SkinPen is the more gentle option that’s appropriate for all skin types. Its results can still be impressive, especially if you combine it with PRP!
Treatment Area
Both SkinPen and Morpheus8 can be used anywhere on the face and body, including around the eyes. With several treatment modes and microneedling tips, your nurse can adjust your treatment to suit your unique needs in each target area.
Results
Both SkinPen and Morpheus8 improve the look of the skin through collagen stimulation.
With both, you can expect results such as:
- Significantly tighter skin
- Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
- Minimized scarring and blemishes
- Reduction in skin texture and smaller-looking pores
- Stretch mark and cellulite reduction
As for differences, Morpheus8’s ability to coagulate adipose tissue means it can also help address stubborn areas of fat, leading to a more toned look. Its depth of penetration also allows it to reduce the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks, which are located deep below the surface of the skin.
SkinPen, however, might be a better solution for those dealing with hyperpigmentation or dark spots, which often cannot be treated with procedures that heat the skin.
Finally, you may see more dramatic results within fewer sessions with Morpheus8, thanks to its higher intensity, but with consistency, you can expect smoother, healthier skin no matter which you choose.
Recovery
Morpheus8’s higher intensity means you can expect a slightly longer period of recovery after treatment. You’ll also need to be extremely careful about sun exposure in the days before and after treatment.
SkinPen is the more gentle option, with less downtime. Your skin will bounce back to normal within 24 hours. You can safely undergo SkinPen all year round, without worrying about intense sun exposure in the days before and after the treatment.
Before & After Your SkinPen or Morpheus8 Procedure
Prior to and following your microneedling or Morpheus8 appointment, it’s important to adhere to the following guidelines:
Before
- Before your appointment, please review our customer care page for policies and contraindications, and inform your nurse of your medical history and any medical conditions.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure while undergoing treatment. With Morpheus8, especially, your skin must be at its base color. SkinPen is more forgiving of some sun exposure, although we still recommend using sunscreen before and after.
- Avoid using topical retinoids or chemical exfoliants for 24 hours prior to your SkinPen, or 48 hours prior to Morpheus8.
- You cannot have radiation therapy, laser therapy, exfoliating facial treatments, microdermabrasions, or chemical peels for at least 2 weeks before and after treatment.
After
- For the first 24 hours, avoid using any skincare products unless otherwise advised by your nurse.
- You can rinse your skin with cool water to calm it down. After the first day, you may use gentle, soothing skincare products.
- For 72 hours following treatment, avoid excessive sun exposure, intense exercise, and exposure to hot temperatures such as saunas or hot tubs.
- For 7 days following the treatment, continue to avoid using harsh or exfoliating skincare products such as retinoids, BHAs, or AHAs.
- Apply SPF consistently & daily throughout the duration of your full treatment process.
