How Long Until Hairs Fall Out After Laser?

Laser hair removal works by targeting hair at its root — and while the effects may feel instant, there’s a natural timeline to visible results. One of the most common questions we get at SEV is: When will the treated hairs fall out? After your session, the treated hair follicles will likely begin a shedding phase. It’s important to know that this shedding is not new hair growth, but a sign that the laser did its job. This usually starts within the first week or two, although it’s not always a noticeable process.

Understanding the Hair Shedding Timeline

Laser hair removal relies on a process called selective photothermolysis. During treatment, the laser’s light energy is absorbed by the melanin in your hair follicles. This energy heats and damages the follicle, especially the matrix and stem cells responsible for growth. Right after a session, that targeted hair begins to die. What follows over the next 7–14 days is a gradual shedding of those damaged hairs. This shedding might look like stubble or new growth at first, but don’t worry, it’s actually the hair pushing out of the follicle. You may even notice these hairs coming out more easily when exfoliating or towel-drying your skin. That’s totally normal. It’s also normal for not all hairs to shed at once. Laser treatments are only effective on hairs in the anagen (active growth) phase. Only a portion of your hair is in that phase at any given time. That’s why laser hair removal always involves multiple sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Lastly, your shedding may not be noticeable at all, especially if you shave in between laser appointments. Rest assured that your laser hair removal treatments are still working even if you don’t notice a shedding process. Over time, as more hair follicles are treated in their growth phase, you’ll see reduced regrowth and smoother skin. Most clients need a minimum of 8 treatments for visible results, with maintenance touch-ups as needed depending on skin, hair type, and hormonal factors. At SEV, we use dual-wavelength laser machines like the Candela GentleMax Pro and Cynosure Elite IQ to deliver customized, effective treatments for all skin tones. Our certified technicians and nurses are trained to guide you through every step, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience.
