What to Wear To Laser Hair Removal

What you wear to your laser hair removal appointment matters…

Kind of.

Clothes won’t impact your results, but they can impact your comfort.

You don’t want to wear something that’ll be hard to move aside or take off, and you don’t want fabric that can chafe against your freshly-lasered skin. Beyond that, laser hair removal should be an uplifting experience, so you want to wear something you can feel good in!

To make your laser experience as breezy as possible, here are our tips for what to wear to your appointment.

Choosing What to Wear to Laser Hair Removal

Consider these key facts when choosing the clothes that’ll come in contact with your treated skin.

How It Fits

Loose and flowy is best, as it allows for easier removal before your appointment and reduces the risk of chafing afterward. Alternatively, if you’re treating areas like the underarms, legs, or lower belly, you can choose tight tank tops, crop tops, or shorts that won’t get in the way of your session.

Fabric Considerations

Reach for clothes made of soft and breathable fabrics — bonus points if they have naturally antibacterial or moisture-wicking properties.

Natural fabrics, such as cotton or ultrafine merino wool, are best. On hot days, linen is a great option as long as it’s not rough.

Be careful with brand-new clothes that are:

  • Heavily dyed
  • Dirt-repellant
  • Non-iron
  • Made from synthetic/processed fabrics

Factors like softness and moisture-wicking properties can make these an attractive choice, but they can also contain trace chemicals that may irritate the skin. This includes naturally-derived fabrics like viscose, modal, and bamboo.

Washing removes most of those processing chemicals, so you can definitely wear clothes you’ve already had in rotation for a while.

Finally, stay away from rough or textured fabrics, regardless of the material they’re made of, as they’re more likely to chafe and irritate.

UV Protection

Clothes can offer excellent protection from sun exposure, which is a must after a laser session. UV rays can penetrate through very loosely-woven fabrics, so choose something that’s more opaque or UPF-rated.

Clothing By Treatment Area

Bikini and Brazilian

The question clients ask us most often is what to wear for their bikini laser hair removal appointment. A dress or skirt is the ideal clothing item to wear for bikini and Brazilian laser hair removal, because you can just lift it up during treatment. Otherwise, choose looser shorts or pants that come off easily.

Keep in mind that you will need to remove your undergarments for a Brazilian treatment. For a bikini line treatment, you might be able to shift them from side to side.

For your comfort, reach for your softest pair of panties, boxers, or whatever undies you enjoy. Even a thong is fine as long as you find it comfortable and non-chafing. If you’re feeling bold, there’s nothing wrong with going commando!

Lower Body

For lower body laser treatments, once again, skirts are best as they’ll give your provider easy access. Otherwise, easy-to-remove buttons with a looser fit and elastic waistband will also work. If you’re only treating half-legs, a pair of shorts is fine.

You may also want to choose sandals or slip-off shoes, especially if you’ll be wearing trousers that need to come off.

Upper Body

If you’re only treating select areas, like the arms, shoulders, or underarms, a sleeveless top that reveals the entire treatment area will work best. If you’re treating larger areas like the back, abdomen, or chest, choose a comfortable, soft shirt that you can remove easily.

Bring a second layer, like a cotton button-up shirt or a hoodie, for post-treatment sun protection or warmth.

Face & Neck

The face and neck are not areas you’d usually cover with clothing, but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook — consider how you’ll protect your skin after your treatment.

At SEV, we’ll always hook you up with some sunscreen after treating your skin, but that’s not true with all laser hair removal providers. Consider bringing a wide-brimmed hat or a tube of sunscreen with you for additional protection.

If you’re getting treated in winter, skip rough wool scarves, and bring a softer pashmina to keep you warm.

What to Wear After Laser Hair Removal

Realistically, what you’ll wear after your laser hair removal appointment is also what you’ll wear to the appointment. If you’re coming to your appointment straight from the gym or the office, having a change of clothes can make things easier.

Focus on items that are:

  • Are soft against the skin
  • Comfortable for the weather
  • Made of breathable fabrics
  • Offer protection from the sun
