For men, lip fillers are becoming an increasingly popular choice. Having full, nourished lips is attractive regardless of gender, especially when your injector knows how to tailor your filler to your features. Whether you’re seeking a more symmetrical or balanced smile or a smoother lip line, this guide to lip fillers for men will help you prepare for what’s in store.
Do Men Get Lip Filler?
Yes, men do get lip filler! Every year, we see more and more male clients come in to get their lips enhanced and adjusted.
Male celebrities are also getting lip fillers, even if they’re not shouting about it from the rooftops. Just look at before-and-after photos of your favorite male singer or leading man. You’ll see that quite a few of them are sporting smoother, slightly fuller lips than they did 15 or 20 years ago.
Lip fillers for men don’t have to be ultra-voluminous. While some guys do want the plumped-up look, most use filler to balance out a thin upper lip or to correct the loss of volume that comes with age.
What Men Need to Know About Lip Filler
If you’re a guy who’s curious about lip filler, here are the key facts we think you need to know.
1) It’s Natural
Lip filler is made of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance the human body produces naturally in order to keep our joints lubricated and our skin moist. In lip fillers, the hyaluronic acid is cross-linked into a gel, which gives it a bouncy texture. Different fillers have slightly different textures, which allows for different types of effects.
2) It’s Very Customizable
Lip fillers aren’t one-size-fits-all, especially when it comes to men. Treatments should always include a quick consultation to guide how your provider will inject your lips.
Based on your needs and features, your injector will help you choose the right type of filler, the quantity, and the specific areas of your lips where you want to add volume.
3) It Doesn’t Last Forever
Because lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, the body metabolizes them over time. How long it takes for lip filler to dissipate varies from person to person, but men often have faster metabolism, which may result in needing more frequent touch-ups. On the flip side, if you’re a little nervous about getting fillers, you might appreciate knowing they’re not a lifetime commitment.
4) Filler Can Be Dissolved
You can also choose to speed up the breakdown of your lip filler with the help of dissolver. Made of hyaluronidase, dissolver injections quickly break down filler and bring your lips back to baseline.

Lip Filler for Men Before and After
It’s hard to envision what filler will look like without an example, so here’s a men’s lip filler before and after photo from one of our clients at SEV. For this client, the goal was to create just slightly fuller lips, with a bit more balance between the upper and lower lip. These are immediate results, although as swelling from the injection itself subsides, the lips settle into something a little more subtle.
What’s It Like Getting Lip Filler?
Getting lip filler is a simple process. After booking your appointment, you will first need to get medically cleared by a doctor or nurse practitioner, just to make sure you can be treated safely.
Then, before or during your appointment, you’ll discuss your desired outcome with your provider, and they’ll work with you to create a lip filler action plan. If you arrive at your appointment 30 minutes early, they may also be able to apply a topical anesthetic to prevent any discomfort from the injection.
Based on your action plan, your provider will mark the injection sites and then begin injecting. Without numbing cream, you may feel a small sting from the injection. The entire process normally takes less than 15 minutes.
Immediately after, your lips might be a little swollen. This is normal, and will subside within a few days — at which point you’ll be able to evaluate your final lip filler results.
Men’s Lip Filler Pre- and Post-Care Tips
Lip fillers are a quick, simple procedure, but there are still important pre- and post-care instructions you’ll need to follow.
Pre-Care
Before getting lip fillers, you’ll need to stop using any medications or supplements with a blood-thinning effect (including NSAIDS).
Take a break from topical products such as retinoids and AHAs/BHAs for 2-3 days before treatment.
Avoid alcohol consumption for 2 days before getting lip fillers, and limit your caffeine consumption on the day of your appointment.
Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin.
If you’re interested in topical numbing, ask about arriving a little earlier.
Post-Care
Resist the urge to touch or massage your lips. You can use a cold pack to soothe the area intermittently (for 10 minutes max, once per hour)..
Avoid vaping, smoking, kissing, consuming alcohol, or drinking from straws for 1-2 days.
After treatment, avoid intense exercise and stay away from excessive heat ( including saunas and steam rooms) for 1-2 days.
Continue to avoid exfoliation for at least 48 hours.
Do not apply makeup for at least 6 hours after your treatment.
Sleep with your head slightly elevated to minimize swelling.
Do not schedule any facial treatments, laser procedures, chemical peels, massages, or dental procedures for the two weeks following treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do men’s lip fillers last?
Most lip fillers are advertised to last for up to 12 months, but the amount injected and your metabolism also play a role. We recommend coming back for a consultation or touch-up 6 months after getting lip injections to review results.
Are lip fillers safe?
Yes. Lip fillers undergo rigorous testing and are approved by the FDA as medical devices. They’re safe as long as they’re administered by a trained and qualified medical practitioner, such as the aesthetic nurse injectors at SEV. The common side effects are usually quick to resolve, although it’s important to be aware of potential complications or contraindications.
Do lip fillers hurt?
Almost all lip fillers used today contain a bit of lidocaine to prevent pain. You may feel a sting during the injection, and there can be some mild soreness in the hours after treatment. Overall, most patients find it easy to tolerate even without topical numbing.
What are the side effects of lip fillers for men?
Common lip filler side effects include mild bruising, temporary swelling, redness, and temporary lumps. These usually resolve on their own with a bit of time. If you experience excessive swelling, vision changes, difficulty swallowing or breathing, seek medical care immediately.
How much do men’s lip fillers cost?
The cost for men’s lip fillers usually varies depending on your injector and the amount of filler you get injected. At SEV Laser, our lip filler treatments start at $600.
