Lush, kissable lips — isn’t that the whole point of lip filler? As we write this, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so all things love are on our mind. One of the questions our filler clients often ask is how long they need to wait to kiss after getting lip fillers.
It depends on what you mean when you say kiss, but typically, you’ll want to wait between 24-48 hours before kissing. Here’s the lowdown:
- Avoid all kissing for 24 hours (including gentle pecks)
- Avoid more passionate kissing after lip filler for at least 72 hours
- Waiting gives time for swelling to subside & the hyaluronic acid gel to settle
- Beyond that, avoid drinking from straws for 48 hours after your treatment
- Limit alcohol consumption for 24 hours post-treatment
How Lip Fillers Work
Lip fillers are minimally-invasive cosmetic injections where hyaluronic acid gel is injected into the lips. Filler adds volume, boosts moisture, smooths out lines, and refines the lip shape.
Different fillers have subtly different textures, and the skill of your injector also plays a big role in the final look. Most aesthetic concerns, whether it’s lip size, symmetry, or fine lines around the lip line, can be addressed with filler. Results can range from natural and subtle to bold and dramatic, depending on your goals and your injector’s approach.
When Is It Safe to Kiss After Lip Filler?
Kissing lightly is typically safe after 24 hours. As for more passionate “French” kissing after lip filler, wait at least 48 hours.
After lip filler, your lips will be a little swollen and uncomfortable. The filler itself, made of hyaluronic acid, can also take a few days to settle into place. During that time, you’ll want to avoid excessive pressure, friction, puckering, and lip movement. Even straws are off limits for a couple of days!
Here are the reasons why:
Side Effects
The most common lip filler side effects are discomfort, bruising, and swelling, which usually last a few days. Kissing too soon can be uncomfortable and may even prolong or worsen these side effects, so give your lips a little time to heal before kissing.
Risk of Infection
Kissing can transfer bacteria from your partner’s lips or saliva. If the injection site hasn’t fully closed, even a little smooch can introduce germs, creating a small risk of infection. Give your lips time to seal before puckering up.
Time to Settle
Filler needs to settle into place after it has been injected. Kissing may disrupt it, potentially leading to lip filler migration or lumpiness. That said, these issues are more frequently caused by poor injection technique and lip movement over time.
Lip Filler Post-Care Tips
Filler is a low-maintenance treatment. Here are a few easy things you should do after getting lip fillers to help get back to kissing in no time:
- Use a cold pack to help reduce swelling
- For 24 hours, do not rub or touch the injected site
- Avoid lying down or leaning forward for 4 hours after treatment
- Sleep on your back with your head elevated to prevent swelling
- Keep your lips clean with gentle cleansing products
- Wait 6 hours before wearing lipstick or other lip makeup
- Avoid alcohol consumption and smoking or vaping for at least 24 hours
- Don’t drink from straws or engage in other activities that pucker your lips for 48 hours
Is It Weird to Kiss With Filler?
For the first few weeks after getting lip filler, kissing may feel a little different. That’s expected. Mild residual swelling and the normal settling process can make the lips feel unfamiliar at first. As long as sufficient time has passed and there is no pain or tenderness, kissing is completely safe, and you’ll be kissing comfortably in no time.
Kissing After Botox Lip Flip
Botox lip flips are having their moment, and for a good reason. They’re a more subtle lip enhancement that helps define and balance the upper lip. The Botox relaxes the muscles of the upper lip, helping them relax forward for a fuller smile. The effect typically lasts for a couple of months, so it’s a great alternative to more long-lasting filler.
After getting a Botox lip flip, wait between 24 and 48 hours to kiss. As with filler, gentle kissing is typically safe sooner, but you’ll want to wait until any discomfort or swelling from the injection has subsided completely before engaging in anything more intense.
Bottom Line
Real talk: with post-treatment tenderness and swelling, kissing probably won’t be high on your to-do list right after lip filler. Once swelling and sensitivity resolve, you’ll love your new look — and you’ll probably be ready to show it off.
Clinical bottom line: wait 24 hours before light kissing and 48 hours before any prolonged or passionate kissing, to reduce irritation and infection risk.
