Botox is one of the most incredible treatments in our arsenal, with dozens of different cosmetic and medical uses. Depending on how it’s injected, it can fade wrinkles, balance the face, or add a targeted lift. But as you may already know, its effects are temporary — so how often should you get Botox? That’s the question we’ll explore in this guide.
How Botox Works
Botox is a neuromodulator that blocks the signaling in the muscles that causes contractions. It works in the specific muscles where it’s injected, forcing them to relax. So, for example, when it’s injected into muscles in the forehead, it stops the muscle movement that causes forehead wrinkles.
This muscle-paralysing action has many medical uses, but when it comes to aesthetics, Botox is primarily used to relax muscles responsible for the formation of dynamic wrinkles. It helps significantly soften lines and wrinkles in the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes. Botox can also help minimize and relax an overactive jaw, lightly balance or enhance the upper lip, and even treat bunny line wrinkles in the nose.
Botox usually starts to set in 3-5 days after injection, with its effects becoming more noticeable in the days after. It then usually takes 2 weeks for its full impact to take hold. Dysport, another neuromodulator that works similarly, often sets in a little faster — within a week of injection.
How Often Can You Get Botox?
In the vast majority of cases, it’s best to get Botox every 3-4 months. For most people, that’s the timeframe when the Botox begins to fade. It’s easy to tell it’s time to book an appointment because you’ll see the muscle movement return.
By getting treated consistently within this timeframe, you can maintain your results and ensure that continuous muscle movement doesn’t cause lines and wrinkles to deepen or become more etched in.
In some cases, Botox may wear away as quickly as within 2 months — even so, we still recommend waiting a full 3 months before getting injected again. For others, the effects can last for up to 6 months, in which case you can get away with bi-yearly treatments.
Factors that Impact Botox Longevity
Botox Quantity
The amount of Botox used has a significant impact on both the intensity and longevity of results. The more Botox is injected, the longer it’ll take your body to clear it away, and the longer the results. Too small an amount and your Botox will wear away faster, and probably won’t create the effect you’re hoping for.
It’s perfectly okay to start with a small amount, especially if you’re looking for “baby Botox” or you’re nervous about unnatural results. Just consider scheduling a check-in for 2 weeks after your appointment, in case you want a touch-up.
Area & Muscle Activity
The treatment area can also influence how quickly Botox wears away. The 3-4 month figure we normally cite is based on the most popular treatment areas: the forehead, corners of the eyes, and between the brows. Some areas, like around the mouth or jawline, may wear away faster due to greater movement or muscle strength.
Gender can play a part here: Men may find that their Botox wears off a little faster if the dose isn’t adjusted.
Metabolism & Lifestyle
We often think of fast metabolism as a good thing, but when it comes to Botox, it does mean your results will wear away faster. With faster metabolism, your body clears away chemicals like Botox faster, which causes your muscles to return to their usual activity sooner as well.
Exercise also ties into this, as it can speed up your metabolic process. Studies show that high levels of physical activity correlate with less noticeable or long-lasting Botox results. This means you may need to get Botox more frequently if you lead a very active lifestyle.
Botox Consistency
You may discover that with regular Botox use, you’re able to wait longer and longer between treatments. It’s not that the Botox builds up or that its effects last longer. What actually happens is that, over time, the muscles can become smaller due to inactivity from consistent Botox use. As a result, the aesthetic results of your Botox may remain.
However, there is also a risk that as the muscle shrinks over the course of years of treatment, you lose volume in the treated area. This is why it’s imperative to have an experienced and honest Botox provider with a robust understanding of how Botox works for different people and across different time spans, like our nurses at SEV.
They’ll be able to examine your features and analyze your results throughout your treatment process, to ensure that at any given point, you receive the right treatment for you (and don’t get treated at all if there are signs your muscles need a break).
Are There Any Risks to Getting Botox Too Often?
There are some potential risks to getting Botox too often, which is why we won’t treat anyone more frequently than once every 3 months. These risks include:
- Developing resistance to Botox from over-injection
- Muscle overcompensation in other areas leading to facial asymmetry
- Muscle weakness and shrinkage leading to unwanted cosmetic changes
For these reasons, it’s important to wait until the Botox has had a chance to start wearing away before you get injected again.
Can You Get Botox to Last Longer?
Aside from following your provider’s instructions for pre and post-care, there are a few small things you can do that may help Botox last a little longer.
First of all, you can ask your provider about increasing the dose. This may not be appropriate in all scenarios, especially if you’re happy with your aesthetic outcomes or if you’re already using the maximum reasonable amount.
If you tend to exercise very intensely, switching to more moderate workouts may also help you retain Botox for longer. In most cases, fitness enthusiasts choose the reverse: They prefer to get Botox more often while maintaining their regimen.
There is some limited evidence that suggests a higher zinc intake may correlate with better longevity — studies are not conclusive, so this is not something we recommend yet.
